SWEET SUCCESS FOR CHARITY

In April 2011 Bridgwater Amateur Operatic Society presented the dynamic musical Sweet Charity. It told the tale of dance hall hostess Charity Hope Valentine and her attempts to find a boyfriend. The role demanded a talented singer, dancer and actor and the society was fortunate to cast local dancing teacher Katy Gunningham in the part. Katy’s hard work has been now rewarded. During the production she received huge acclaim from the public for her performance and she now receives recognition in the amateur theatrical world by winning the coveted Rose Bowl Award for best actress in a musical.

The award was presented at a glittering ‘Oscars type’ celebration at the Winter Gardens in Weston Super Mare on Sunday 16th October 2011.
In announcing the winner the following commendation from the adjudicator was read to the assembled theatrical folk attending the dinner…
‘Rarely do I come across a performance that excites me from beginning to end- but this Charity was truly stunning! The performer has excellently trained dance and voice skills, but for me the most important facet of the performance, was the energy, the grasp of comedy play and above all – the acting. This was a superb performance’.
BAOS is pleased and proud that Katy won the award and Sue Pomeroy the director of Sweet Charity commented ‘Katy’s performance was outstanding, her attention to detail in every way was commendable, her performance, her looks (she even dyed her hair red) her clothing… she was Charity’.
Sweet Charity was also nominated for a Rose Bowl for Best Musical but lost out to a theatre group from Bath.
Sue commented ‘the cast and production team worked very hard to achieve an exceptional standard and we are delighted to have been nominated.
